"My Little Sisters Keeper" Program Started By Woman of Delta Sigma Theta
Mai Brantley is a third-year Law Student attending the University of Missouri from St. Louis, Missouri. While attending Mizzou's Law School, she has received two #1 placements in oral advocacy competitions and is also a Teaching Assistant to a law school professor while teaching undergraduate Finance. Not only is Mai looking forward to graduating from law school, but she is also looking forward to competing at Miss Missouri USA as she hopes to represent Missouri at Miss USA.
Over the past year, Mai has felt a strong desire to be a positive influence in a world where value is placed on likes and hashtags. Mai admits that she personally faces her own issues when it comes to self-confidence and staying grounded in everyday life. With social media being so prominent in today’s society hasn’t helped. "I can’t imagine what it’s like to be a 6th, 7th or 8th grader with so much access to the Internet and sometimes unrealistic beauty standards", Mai states. Luckily, she has a big sister to help keep her confident and learn the importance of setting smart goals. "I believe there are building blocks to creating a confident, well-rounded girl and I want to help girls discover what it is that makes them extraordinary. So, I decided to found a non-profit organization- My Little Sister's Keeper. I started the organization to help empower and uplift middle school aged girls." The purpose of the organization is to cultivate a positive environment for girls in that age group to learn, think, and grow.
The name was an easy decision for Mai. With her being as spiritual as she is, the name just came to her mind. "I originally started out with 'My Sister's Keeper' on the premise that I was inspired to start the organization by the women that have inspired me throughout my life; my big sister (who is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.), my Delta Sisters, mentors like Kam Phillips who founded Dream Outside the Box and even my childhood best friends." Mai feels very blessed that I can always count on her big sister and others, but she wants girls of today to feel that blessing as well. The organization’s first event will be August 14th from 1:30-4:00 PM at Rosati Kain High School in Saint Louis, Missouri. The event will feature a keynote speaker as well as group break out sessions for all of the girls---Completely FREE.
