Congresswoman-Elect & Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Lauren Underwood Wins in One of Illinois' Reddest Districts
History has been made in the state of Illinois. Lauren Underwood, a 32-year old woman and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., defeated Rep. Randy Hultgren in the IL-14 District election on November 6th, 2018. This district has repeatedly been represented by the Republican party until now. Congresswoman-Elect Underwood will be the first African-American & first woman to represent the district.
Congresswoman-Elect Lauren Underwood became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. at the University of Michigan by way of the Beta Eta chapter. Underwood has worked for the Obama administration where she helped in the rollout of the ACA and later, assisted in public health emergencies such as the Flint Water Crisis.
After her time with the Obama Administration, Congresswoman-Elect Underwood returned home to regroup and revitalize. She attended Hultgren’s one and only public event where he made a promise to protect healthcare for those with pre-existing conditions. The statement Hultgren made was not true as he later voted to repeal the ACA. It was at this moment in time where Congresswoman-Elect Underwood decided to run. As a woman with a pre-existing condition, she could not sit back and watch this happen.
Since running for Congress, she has graced the cover of TIME as one of the top Democratic races to watch.
During her campaign, Congresswoman-Elect Underwood has been endorsed by President Barack Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden and countless other groups.
Let’s support Congresswoman-Elect Lauren Underwood by saying congratulations in the comments below as well as sharing this heartwarming story!
