Sigma Gamma Rho Chapter in St. Louis To Sponsor St. Louis Film Festival with "The Life & Death of Sandra Bland" Premiering
On Sunday November 4 Cinema St. Louis Film Festival Sponsored by Zeta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. will host a 4:30 pm showing at Tivoli Theatre on the Delmar Loop in St. Louis, Missouri.
Sandra Bland was initiated into the Delta Alpha chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. on the campus of Prairie View A&M University. On July 10th, 2015, she was stopped by a police officer for failure to signal a lane change which then lead to an arrest. Bland was found hanged in a jail cell on July 13th, 2015, which many did not believe was a plausible cause of death.
The Say Her Name: The Life & Death of Sandra Bland Documentary is produced by HBO's Documentary Film Division, combines Sandra Bland's actual video blogs with features from her family and their legal team. Earlier this year, the film debuted at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival in New York and had remarkable reviews.
The film unfolds the story of Sandra Bland who is an unapologetic, young black woman who lost her life while in police custody after a routine traffic stop. Even in Bland's death, she has managed to become a prominent voice against institutional injustices aimed towards Black people in America. The film is a vigorous case study that explores the systemic racism in American law enforcement practices.
The film is making its theatrical run showing in select cities the week of November 9th ahead of its highly anticipated air date of December 3, 2018 on HBO. Please support the showings and host gatherings to view the documentary. After the viewing there will be a Q and A with Sandra Bland’s sister and attorney.
